new-bbm-1

Last month we told you about the new BlackBerry Messenger coming with OS 5.0. Yesterday links to the BlackBerry Messenger client leaked on the Internet for all recent BlackBerry devices, but people kept asking for OTA links. So our dude, 0mie over at 0mieTechSupport, made the downloads over the air and hooked it up! We decided to host them here as well, so feel free to visit our links from your BlackBerry Browser and it should prompt you to download it.

Please remember that this BlackBerry Messenger version is in beta and may still be buggy. We STRONGLY encourage you to backup your BlackBerry before upgrading. We can not be liable for any damages it may cause.

EDIT: DO NOT UPDATE IF YOU HAVE ANY OS LOWER THAN 4.5.0.131!

EDIT2: If you have any problems with this you must leave a comment with what BlackBerry you are using, and the OS you are running.

EDIT3: RIM seems to have enabled the Avatar feature today. If you still have trouble getting your Avatar seen, please attempt to re-upload your Avatar and/or restart your device.

EDIT4: Please follow this link if you wish to downgrade back to your original BBM. http://forums.crackberry.com/f86/how-can-i-downgrade-old-bbm-271634/

FINAL EDIT: The official BlackBerry Messenger 5.0 has been released by RIM. We recommend that you download this version instead of the beta versions. You can read about the official BBM here: http://smartphonenation.com/2009/10/blackberry-messenger-5-0-officially-available-in-app-world/

    I have the BBerry 8330, OS 4.5.0.77. I have installed twice. No icon. I have rebooted (removed battery) twice. Still nothing. The link provided to downgrade – I can’t find what to click on to downgrade!

    Do you have a simple solution to finding the Icon for the 5.0 messenger?

    PLEASE HELP. I have spent HOURS on trying to fix this.

    Thanks

    btw – I have read many forums, links, etc and to no avail….

  6. [M.T.E]-dacypher July 21, 2009 at 10:37 PM -

    If your icon is disappearing once you downloaded the OTA you pretty much didn’t read the first part of the instructions, and now you have no BBM!!

    Go to Options –> Advanced Options –>Applications

    Delete BBM 5.0(and BBM 4.5 if its still there)

    Restart your BB

    Plug your BB into your comp and run desktop manager

    Go to Application Loader then Add/Remove Applications

    Once the list is generated look for BBM 4.5 make sure its checked and the action is “install”

    Click Next(I dont remember what the caption of the button is)

    But after that you’ll have your BBM back

    BUUT!

    If you want BBM 5.0, go to:

    Options –> About – Check what OS version you have, and as stated by the author
    “EDIT: DO NOT UPDATE IF YOU HAVE ANY OS LOWER THAN 4.5.0.131!”
    So if your OS version is LOWER than 4.5.0.131 then you’ll have to update your OS.

    Go to http://na.blackberry.com/eng/services/devices/

    Follow the instructions, update your OS, grab the OTA for BBM 5.0
    Boom your done and ready to add all your bbm friends again.

    Hope this helps

    Ashley…ur gettin an internal error for ur 4.5.081 becuz u need version 4.5.131 or HIGHER to upgrade to bbm5.0. Ur os is not compatible, so upgrade ur os and then try to dload bbm5.0 again.

    You guys have to be careful when downloading this software to your phones… I downloaded it and it completely wiped out my messenger as well… It wasnt until I LOOKED at my Operating Software and downloaded the correct one did my messenger come back but all my info was missing… BE VERY CAREFUL… Check to see what software your phone is running first!!! Then download…

    Phone: 8350i Nextel Blackberry
    Newest revision of OS version 4.6

    Installed the app and it worked great for about 4 hours, as did the rest of my phone. Attempted to use the “Send my location” feature of BBM5, at this time my phone showed the signs of a reboot. unfortunately before fulling booting (white screen w/ the “waiting” clock) it is now in a continuous reboot. This has been the case for the past twenty (20) minutes. I attempted to removed the battery, reinserted it, and hoped it would boot correctly, but unfortunately it has not.

  11. Andrew Duong July 22, 2009 at 6:03 AM -

    As told above, this is a beta software so problems can occur and please backup all your data as we take no responsibility to your loss.

    The location service does not seem to work as of now but everything else does. Messages also are sometimes delayed as you will notice a check-mark beside your sent message but no D or R until later on. I assume this is a network issue so attempt to reboot your device and this should fix the problem temporarily

    As said before, **PLEASE DO NOT DOWNLOAD THIS SOFTWARE UNLESS YOU HAVE 4.5.0.131 AND ABOVE!**
    To downgrade, please follow this link.

    Hello I have a sprint bb tour and my bff back home in new york has a verizon bb. We both have downloaded the new bbm 5.0 but she can’t see my avatar! I don’t know why!

  18. J July 22, 2009 at 1:00 PM -

    p2bplastic007, instead of bad-mouthing the site and putting blame on us, you may want to go back and read the post. If you read it you would have found out that you can not get it if you have 4.5.0.131 or lower. You would have also seen a link on how to downgrade your BBM, instead of asking 5 times. If you have a problem with our site do not come back.

  19. Andrew Duong July 22, 2009 at 1:37 PM -

    If your not seeing your icon, install 5.0 bbm through your BlackBerry desktop manager unless your OS is under 4.5.0.131.

    Avatar does work for most users but does delay when uploading it.

  20. BlackHead July 22, 2009 at 2:40 PM -

    Downloaded it for my bold 7/22/09 and worked perfectly fine. No problems. I know some have experienced losing their icon (not to be the case, it was loaded in the application folder). As long as you download the correct file for your phone, you should be fine. Also, during downloading, click yes to all the prompts as it will replace your existing rim app so that the features will work fine. It’s really cool. Once everyone uses it…(reminds me of twitter). Really cute…happy to have it.

    Does anyone know if this works for the world phone 8830 from sprint??

  23. Ashlee July 22, 2009 at 5:18 PM -

    If someone knows how I can upgrade my OS from 4.5.0.77 to 4.5.0.133 can you please email me at [email protected] I can’t find it anywhere and I want this new messenger really bad! Thanks ahead of time!!

    I have the blackberry 8330 I downloaded the new bbm but now my icon doesn’t even shows what should I do now

  25. AaronS July 22, 2009 at 5:49 PM -

    When I click on the download link there is no .zip file. Only a .jad file which is 2.1kb. Is this correct? Or am I doing something wrong?

  26. Andrew Duong July 22, 2009 at 7:49 PM -

    AaronS,

    Yes that is correct. OTA files are .jad which can be installed directly to your BlackBerry without extracting like a .zip file.

    To All:

    If you are having problems, please indicate your BlackBerry model number and OS version which can be located under Options>About (Not Platform) It will say v4.6.1.250 or something similar and post below as we will try and help out as much as possible. You can also check out this link as many questions and problems have been answered and solved here.

    I have the pearl flip 8220 and suffered the same fate as the others above. It deleted my bbm icon. After trying to located my bbm icon for awhile i decided to downgrade. I deleted bbm 5.0 from the advanced options and reinstalled my previous version of bbm from the Black Berry Software disc (Black Berry Desktop Manager). It worked out perfectly. However if you dont have backup data of your blackberry you will have to add all of your contacts back on bbm.

  29. mochap19 July 22, 2009 at 10:25 PM -

    How can I download bbm 5.0 on my bb curve 8330? It’s sprint.

  30. mochap19 July 22, 2009 at 10:33 PM -

    It’s OS is v4.5.0.131.

  31. Kenenth July 22, 2009 at 10:38 PM -

    Ok i got it to work on my BB Curve 8320 with OS 4.5.081 forst time around and i didnt lose any of my contacts. This is how i did it. I download the lastest desktop manager 5.0 from the blackberry website. i backed up my phone just in case the new BBM messenger messed up my phone. i chicked on check for upgrades in the bottom corner of the manager and it updated my current OS 4.5.081 to the same 4.5.081 dont ask me why but it did, i checked my OS before the upgrade and after the upgrade. The i clicked on the link from this website Download for OS 4.5 devices (only 4.5.0.131 or later) and when it started to download it asked me to replace something and i said Yes and it asked me 2 more times and i said Yes. after it was done and it restarted i had the icon on my phone and just clicked it and all my old contacts were there, my friends who also upgraded avators showed. Before i upgraded i use to get the error message 907 unable to zip. I hope this helps the people with OS 4.5.081 The new BBM is very nice.

  32. Andrew Duong July 22, 2009 at 10:50 PM -

    @Danny
    Try and clear your cache in your browser and then reboot your device and make sure your using blackberry’s internet browser and not WAP. Also, if this still doesn’t work. Look for the .zip file and install it through your computer. Crackberry.com has instructions on how to. Also, make sure that you have good signal or connect to WiFi if your device is capable of doing.

    @mochap19
    First, make sure you have completely backed up all your information. So this means contacts on bbm as well as your address book and everything else. Then follow this link (http://smartphonenation.com/BBM5/For_4.5.0/83XXBBM5x.jad) on your BlackBerry device and follow through the steps. Click yes if it asks to overwrite your existing bbm.

  33. Danny July 22, 2009 at 10:58 PM -

    @Andrew
    That worked for me thanks.
    I still would like to download the zip file so that I can install it on the other admins here.
    I did not see the zip download.
    What is the link for it?

  34. Taysa July 22, 2009 at 11:17 PM -

    Im like so mad right now!! my old version is gone and the new 1 doesnt download!!! i have blackberry curve 8320 ,,, i want the old version back pls!!! HO CAN I GET IT BACK just explane it or make a link i dont understand what OTA or the other things are pls help!!

  35. Andrew Duong July 22, 2009 at 11:39 PM -

    @Taysa
    OTA means “Over the Air” so instead of downloading the software and connecting your BlackBerry to your computer. You simply go onto your BlackBerry browser and click on the link and it’ll download “over the air.”

    That being said, if you want to downgrade back to your old version, assuming you downloaded the file OTA, you need to connect your BlackBerry to your computer, run BlackBerry Desktop Manger, then click application loader > update application > go to advance options > check the BlackBerry Messenger box then it will uninstall.
    If you downloaded BlackBerry Messenger 5.0 using your BlackBerry Desktop Manager, you must reinstall your original OS.

    You can ask questions here (http://forums.crackberry.com/f86/how-can-i-downgrade-old-bbm-271634/) as most of your questions as well as many others have already been answered.

    @Danny
    We do not host the .zip files. You can probably find them over at (http://forums.crackberry.com/) as they have hosted them before but keep in mind that if you do have problems with it and attempt to downgrade. You must download the original OS again and then reinstall it onto your BlackBerry vs. just connecting your BlackBerry to your Desktop Manager and unchecking BlackBerry Messenger 5.0

  36. Sasha July 22, 2009 at 11:51 PM -

    I have the 8900. I downloaded it today and its working just great for me so far

  37. Prestigious July 22, 2009 at 11:54 PM -

    Works fine for me and the 4 other phones i did for friends all running on OS 4.5.081. Did same as kenneth said. backup files, downloaded and upgraded to OS 4.5.081 from blackberry.com then came here to downlaod bbm 5.0 for OS 4.5 devices (only 4.5.0.131 or later).. clicked yes to all prompts when asked to replace modules. rebooted phone and bbm icon there along with all contacts all on 5.0..

  38. Prestigious July 22, 2009 at 11:59 PM -

    also everyone who lost their bbm icon and can see the application for 5.0 in their applications list just need to upgrade to OS 4.5.081. when u upgrade and the phone reboots the icon will reappear and 5.0 will work fine.

    Tried to d/l the bbm for my bold, currently using 4.6.0 version but is always getting “http error 500: internal server error” 🙁 🙁 🙁

  42. Andrew Duong July 23, 2009 at 2:53 AM -

    @Azad
    The newest BlackBerry OS for the 8310 is 4.5.0.161, you can download that package by Clicking Here please follow the steps provided here and make sure you are downloading Package Version: 4.5.0.254 with Applications: 4.5.0.161. You can follow these steps by Clicking Here remember to delete the vendor.xml file since this isn’t your carrier.

    @sharon
    Try clearing your cache and then rebooting. This sometimes occurs even when surfing through sites for me. Make sure your using the default internet browser and not WAP. Turn on WiFi and connect it as this could probably solve your problem as well.

  43. melpiee July 23, 2009 at 7:36 AM -

    Hi.. I also have same problem with you guys..
    If you already install bbm then the icon doesn’t appear or lost but in the option~advanced~application still hv bbm application, you can delete
    It and then reinstall it again.

  44. Lizmarie July 23, 2009 at 9:32 AM -

  46. captainconner July 23, 2009 at 11:17 AM -

    Everyone is having this because the links being sent to people are for a stolen version of the MBB5.0… You should only update blackberry software sent from blackberry.

    You need to back up you handset using desktop manager, wipe the handset (factory reset), restore your phone using desktop manager, then download the software from your service providers website, install that to you pc, then start desktop manager again and use the application loader to install the software from you service provider. Your service provider may be reluctant to help you fix your phone as you have broken it yourself by using stolen un-released software. You could play dumb though…

    I work for a service provider in tech support and this issue is causing major problem all over the UK.
