Last month we told you about the new BlackBerry Messenger coming with OS 5.0. Yesterday links to the BlackBerry Messenger client leaked on the Internet for all recent BlackBerry devices, but people kept asking for OTA links. So our dude, 0mie over at 0mieTechSupport, made the downloads over the air and hooked it up! We decided to host them here as well, so feel free to visit our links from your BlackBerry Browser and it should prompt you to download it.

Please remember that this BlackBerry Messenger version is in beta and may still be buggy. We STRONGLY encourage you to backup your BlackBerry before upgrading. We can not be liable for any damages it may cause.

EDIT: DO NOT UPDATE IF YOU HAVE ANY OS LOWER THAN 4.5.0.131!

EDIT2: If you have any problems with this you must leave a comment with what BlackBerry you are using, and the OS you are running.

EDIT3: RIM seems to have enabled the Avatar feature today. If you still have trouble getting your Avatar seen, please attempt to re-upload your Avatar and/or restart your device.

EDIT4: Please follow this link if you wish to downgrade back to your original BBM. http://forums.crackberry.com/f86/how-can-i-downgrade-old-bbm-271634/

FINAL EDIT: The official BlackBerry Messenger 5.0 has been released by RIM. We recommend that you download this version instead of the beta versions. You can read about the official BBM here: http://smartphonenation.com/2009/10/blackberry-messenger-5-0-officially-available-in-app-world/

  8. EDEN September 11, 2009 at 4:46 PM -

I downloaded it a while back & it works just fine. I have the Bold, running vs 4.6.0.297 & I’m w/ATT.

My only issue is “Location Sharing” w/bbmessenger . I request permission to see my husband’s (for example) location, he accepts, but when I click to view his location- NOTHING happens.

What am I missing? How do I fix this? Any thoughts?

  9. GAD September 14, 2009 at 10:51 AM -

Eden; check to make sure that you both have your GPS set to On/All and not E911 only.

(Build O/S 5.0.0.191 Tour on Verizon which currently, no BBM 5+ build works with lest someone can figure out a way, not getting it yet here…)

Needs to hurry up and update it so it can work on the blackberry OS 5.0 please

  25. Chase September 29, 2009 at 11:58 AM -

If you are operating under OS 4.5.0.110 BBM 5.0 WILL NOT WORK! Please ensure that your OS is 4.5.0.110 and above for it to work. If you made the mistake of installing the BBM 5.0 on your Blackberry and it deleted your old version dont worry. There are more than one ways to fix this.

Step 1. Delete the BBM 5.0 from your Blackberry
Step 2. Reinstall your old BBM (4.5, 4.2, or whatever version you had before) using your Desktop Manager with App Loader.

If you do not have the OS required to run BBM 5.0 you can simply download it from the Blackberry website.

    https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads/browseSoftware.do

Install it by running the .exe application. After this is done, install the new OS directly from App Loader.

This App Loader can be found in: My Computer > Local Disk (C) > Program Files > Common Files > Research In Motion > AppLoader. Select the Loader Application there.

P.S. Ensure your Blackberry device is plugged into your computer!

It should prompt you to install the new updates. ensure that the Blackberry Messenger box is checked. it should indicate that it is being updated. Allow the proces to complete before removing your Blackberry device from your computer.

    I hope this helps.

just downloaded OTA for Storm. Brilliant, no problems. Works faster then the older BBM, also better icons and more userfriendly.. a more “msn-like” feel with bubbly icons. looooooooooooove it. Possibly the best upgrade RIM has to offer as of yet. thanks for the LINKS!!
