We have been waiting an awful long time for HP to decide the fate of webOS, the mobile OS bought from Palm. HP has been having fire sales on its previously unpopular TouchPad tablet.
So what is the fate behind webOS? HP will be contributing the OS to the open source community and continue to be active in the development and support. But the efforts of the developers won’t go without use. Meg Whiman, HP president and CEO, explains, “By contibuting this innovation, HP unleashes the creativity of the open source community to advance a new generation of applications and devices.”
HP has set four operating principles to help define the project:
- The goal of the project is to accelerate the open development of the webOS platform
- HP will be an active participant and investor in the project
- Good, transparent and inclusive governance to avoid fragmentation
- Software will be provided as a pure open source project
We are excited to see what comes from this in the future and be sure to keep a look out for those $99 TouchPad fire sales.
