Gmail users who use the Exchange protocol to sync their contacts, calenders, and push email encountered a nasty surprise upon upgrading their iPhones to iOS 4.0.
Hundreds of people flocked to Twitter in the early morning and afternoon to report that their iPhones could not connect to m.google.com in order to synchronize contacts, calenders, and mail.
As of right now this does not look like an AT&T issue or an Apple issue- many have speculated that the problem was caused by an increased load on Gmail’s servers due to the tens of thousands of people who are upgrading to iOS 4.0. There are also reports (see link below) that there have been sync issues using the iOS 4.0 beta firmware over the last few days.
UPDATE:
Some users (http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/gmail/thread?tid=0aea7857b25a174f&hl=en&start=40) have reported that their data is coming in sporadically and have noted that the issue should (we hope) be resolved shortly.
This is NOT a carrier or OS problem. The issue certainly lies with Google.
I live in Belgium and own an iPad. As of this morning I noticed that the mail application seemed to be sending sporadic email updates. It seems the connection to the server is not always working as sometimes I cannot delete messages, other times I simply don’t receive new messages.
Of course if I log into my Gmail via a web browser everything is there and functioning perfectly. This behavior has been seen when connected to both Wifi and 3G.
Google needs to step it up. In today’s environment a couple of hours without email is unacceptable to many.
hi! thats sweet! – just one question, do you know if it is possible to play iphone 3g apps on the new 4g?
I haven’t yet updated to 4.0 and I have still been having issues with Gmail through their microsoft exchange server. Just as a test I set up the older IMAP acount and that works just fine. I don’t think this issue has anything to do with 4.0.
Good website, maintain up the good do the job
If Apple pushed an update to iPhones last night at 10 PM PDT, that would explain a permanent bandwidth increase between our Exchange Outlook Web Access server and our Exchange server at a remote site. When we kill OWA for those with iPhones, traffic goes back to normal. Were the user’s settings, to update every 5 or 15 minutes, changed to continuously look for new mail?
I was using the standard Push notifications with 30 min. update intervals as the secondary option… hope that helps! NVD
my organization is using MS Hosted Exchange services and many iPhones. it appears that the new iPhone4 are not connecting to the Hosted Exchange. the 3g devices are still working as designed.
Congratulations! You have just won a new feed reader 🙂 .. really delicious post, Mike.
It’s a funny fact that despite iPhone 4 has problem with the antena, many people still want to buy it
I do not use the push feature to preserve the battery but when I go into my mail (I use GMAIL) on my iPhone 4, it lists the sender and subject but dies not display any content.
Has anyone else experienced thus issue and has anyone found a resolution to it?
